ARCO ON THE GARDA LAKE
WELCOME
The town of Arco, known as early as 1892 as a holiday resort thanks to the extraordinary mildness of its climate and its luxuriant Mediterranean vegetation, boasts a thousand-old history, as bear witness its Celtic, Roman, Longobard ruins, its well-preserved walls, its impressive Medieval castle and many other buildings of great artistic interest. Arco is the birthplace of Nicolò d’Arco, renowned Latin poet; it also gave birth to Giovanni Segantini, father of the pointillism, and to Caproni, pioneer of the Italian aeronautics. The climate of Arco has been studied and celebrated by well-known artists, poets and writers.
It is ideal for all those who are looking for well-being, peace and sheer relaxation. Arco is it an “open-air greenhouse”, much sought after by lovers of all sort of sport activity that you can practise all year round. It hosts a load of cultural, sporting as well as social events throughout the year. Not a guest has enjoyed its hospitality without being overwhelmed by its peculiar curative as well as climatic features. It is, indeed, a romantic refuge in a Mediterranean microcosm. The world of Arco is one which is still pervaded by an ancient elegance which goes back to its “belle epoque” period, and yet it adjusts to modernity with wise and careful measure.
Arco is a beautiful Mediterranean oasis, and a very well known holiday resort, due to its mild climate throughout the year as well as its clear atmosphere. Arco is a real microcosm, it is history, culture, a luxuriant vegetation of olive-trees, parks and gardens (Arboretum of the Archduke Albert of Hapsburg), with liberty-style villas, a rich and genuine cuisine with excellent robust wines, that used to be one of the favourites of Augusto and Tiberio (Trentinos wine tradition dates back to Roman times). Arco is a town where the fine art of hospitality rules. Ecology and sporting holiday are, indeed, terms that have been living one next to the other, especially in the past few years in our tourist dictionary. Arco is a town which, far better than many others, has been able to grasp the real essence of sports. Every single sporting activity finds in Arco its ideal setting (cycling, football, windsurfing, free climbing, mountain biking, cross country motorcycling racing, hang gliding and parapenting, sailing, base jumping, horse riding, tennis, sport fishing, clay pigeon shooting, mountaineering, hiking and trekking, canyoning, caving, and many others), and the town hosts every year numerous national and international events (professional mens Trentino cycling tour, rock master climbing competition, “Beppe Viola”, junior football tournment, Arco Bike Nature, Chess Festival, Bike Marathon, sailing competitions, etc).
At a short distance from Arco you will be able to enjoy the beautiful waterfall in Varone, lake Tenno, lake Ledro, the Castle of Toblino, the so called “Marocche” in Dro, a nearly 200 million cubic-metre mass of boulders (Dro is indeed one of the most ancient places in the Sarca valley), the “Marmitte dei Giganti”, the medieval village of Canale, one of the many hamlets of Tenno, etc. The area of Arco had certainly been inhabited since ancient times. We find traces of “Arch”, under the Goths, as their stronghold. In the caste of Arco a memorial stone was found which dates back to Roman times and belonged to an an ancient tribe (Fabi). This stone restored the worship of a God, Bergimo, who was sacred to the Gallic tribe of the Cenomani.
